Advice Needed on Best Practices for Redundant Wireless Mesh / Mixing UISP Backhaul with UniFi Access

Background:

I'm helping a friend and his condo board troubleshoot connectivity issues in their multi-family residential community with 11 buildings. The site is currently built on a hybrid Ubiquiti ecosystem, and we are looking to move from a flat "Hub-and-Spoke" model to a more resilient partial mesh/ring topology for redundancy.

Hardware Stack:

Core: ISP -> UDM Pro → USW-Pro-Aggregation → USW Pro 24 PoE -> UISP Console.

Backhaul: 15+ GigaBeam PtP links (60GHz with 5GHz failover) forming the mesh. 3 of these GigaBeams sit in the main building where the Core stack is, and feed off of a Layer 3 switch, not the UISP Console. The other Gigabeams are plugged directly into Layer 2 switches in each of the buildings (see Access Layer below).

Access Layer: A mix of USW Pro Max 16 PoE and US-8-150W switches in the buildings network closets.

Critical Services: 50+ third party cameras connecting to UniFi ENVR / UniFi Protect, DoorKing Access Control, and VoIP.

The Challenge:

Our biggest hurdle is Spanning Tree (RSTP). In a mesh environment, when a 60GHz radio "flutters" or fails over to its 5GHz backup, it seems to trigger a Topology Change Notification (TCN). Because the current network is a flat Layer 2 bridge, these flutters cause intermittent property-wide "blackouts" lasting 30-60 seconds while the switches re-converge. This is causing dropped VoIP calls and camera disconnect alerts.

We are evaluating how to bridge the gap between the UISP wireless layer and the UniFi access layer to achieve sub-second failover. We are considering two paths and would love community input on which is the "right" way to scale this:

The Layer 2 Approach: Keeping everything in a flat bridge, but perhaps utilizing specialized STP settings or UISP-specific features to prevent TCNs from taking down the whole site.

The Layer 3 Approach: Moving the routing "intelligence" to the building gateways (potentially using UISP Routers or UniFi L3 switches) and utilizing OSPF for the backbone.

Questions for the Community:

For those mixing UISP AirMax/GigaBeam with UniFi switches, how do you handle redundancy without suffering from RSTP convergence delays?

If moving to an L3/OSPF backbone, what is the best practice for maintaining a flat IP space for surveillance (UniFi Protect) so we don't have to re-adopt/re-IP 50+ cameras?

Is there a "UniFi-Native" way to handle L2-stretching or sub-second failover across a wireless mesh, or is the consensus to let UISP/EdgeOS handle the routing?

Are there specific "Gotchas" when the UDM Pro receives high-density camera traffic via static routes from a UISP-managed backbone?

We want to iterate on this to get to a resilient, self-healing network - ultimately we know we will likely need to work with a different MSP than who we have now who installed this as is, but has been unable to remediate the issues we are seeing. We'd love to hear from anyone who has successfully navigated the "RSTP vs. OSPF" debate in a high-density residential environment.

Thanks in advance for the insights!

Hello,

We deployed a set of AirFiber 60 XG's yesterday atop of two water towers. They are 3.96 km apart from each other, and link potential is about 72%, -70 db. I cannot get the 60 ghz radios to turn on, it's always running on the backup link. They worked fine when I staged and configured them indoors.

Do you have any thoughts on this? From what I am reading in the forums, we may have chosen the wrong equipment and the XR's would be a better fit.

Thanks

NanoStation 5AC loco Keeps Dropping Connection -- Tuning help?

I have two sites. Site 1 (MASTER) has a Dream Machine + 24 Port POE Switch. I have a NanoStation 5AC loco powered via my 24-port switch.

Site 2 (SLAVE) has a third party POE Injector powering a Unifi Flex 4-Port Switch. The Flex powers the SLAVE NanoStation 5AC loco. Site 2 then distributes Wifi via a TP-LINK Wifi 7 Mesh System.

Site 1 and Site 2 are approximately 150 feet apart. Nano Stations are about 15 feet high. These are in a VERY dense neighborhood in Los Angeles (neighbor homes on either side of the house are ~10 feet apart).

The link has been stable for a few weeks. But recently, the link randomly drops. I've been looking at the channels, and good 5 ghz channels then turn green (more noise) randomly throughout the day. Probably a byproduct of the dense housing. The annoying part is that the Flex Switch then drops off the network and has to be readopted (thankfully this is automatic). But it still causes a 30s to 60s outage every time the link goes down, which is frustrating.

I moved to a DFS channel (blue, lower-noise) in the hopes that this stabilizes the link. But I've read this isn't recommended.

A few questions:

Any tuning suggestions? I'll post screenshots in comments.

Any self-healing options? Like, automatic channel optimization?

Is the nanostation the right option here for a very short-distance link?

We installed two airFiber 60 XG. Distance is 1.48km We got a Signal-Strengh at -46dBm and the Message ist "Link needs improvement" but we already alligned the dishes perfectly. It's not possible to get a better signal.

A problem is also, that the Slave-Antenna don't get a GPS signal. It's mounted on a high building with free sight to the heaven. The other Antenna has GPS connection. Both antennas shows a distance of 1m, guess because one of the GPS signals is missing.

Firmware is AF60.v1.2.0.5e08abe9.241107.0726 on both sides and the dashboard is displaying: You have the latest available firmware version.

We rebooted both sides several times.

What can I do now? The Connection is heavily used, so I can't try along as I want to, but any help would be much apprecianted.

[GBE-LR] 5GHz radio keeps disconnecting

I have an 844m PtP link between GBE-LRs and while the 60GHz connection works well, the built-in 5GHz backup keeps disconnecting all the time. I have rarely seen the connection uptime exceed an hour. Signal strength isn't great at -64dB, but we have many airMAX AC links at that signal strength that work fine (and at least maintain link).

The logfile is very limited, it doesn't even say when the 5GHz connection goes down. I attached support files to this topic, but since the GigaBeam series has disappeared from the webshop, I assume the product is considered EOL and I shouldn't expect any miracles.

Gigabeam SNMP

If you want simple SNMP for the Gigabeam devices you need to edit the /tmp/system.cfg file.

This is not supported by Ubiquiti.

Before you do anything you need to download a backup of the running config from the device. If you mess up editing the system.cfg file then upload the saved config backup file BEFORE you reboot.

This solution uses basic linux commands. If you are not familier with editing configuration filee in linux then please be careful. If you mess up the process you can paperclip reset the device.

SSH into the device. At the command line type: (note- GBE# is the command prompt. Don't type that)

GBE# cd /tmp

then:

GBE# ls

that is a lowercase L not a capital I and is equal to the dir command in windows. This will show you the contents of the folder. There are about 15 or 16 files in my tmp folder. The file you want to worry about is the system.cfg file. if you use the cat command you can see the contents of the file:

GBE# cat system.cfg

This will print out the contents. You will see there is a line that says "snmp.status=enabled"

But there is no way in the GUI to edit the parameters needed for SNMP monitoring of the device. For my situation I use very simple snmpv1 public for the Ubiquiti devices. But I need location information and contact information to make my Extreme (Enterasys) snmp monitoring system happy. If you know what you are doing you can open the file with the vi editor. But I am a lazy non-vi kind of guy. I like nano but it ain't on the Ubiquiti devices and I can never remember the vi commands. So I use the "echo" function. I need the location to be "PFHS" and I need the contact to be "none". Just to be safe I add the "public" community.

GBE# echo snmp.community=public >> system.cfg

GBE# echo snmp.contact=none >> system.cfg

GBE# echo snmp.location=PFHS >> system.cfg

The "echo" command with the double arrows ">>" tell the system to write the string onto the end of the file. If you mess up and only use one arrow ">" you will over-write the file and you system.cfg file will be erased and replaced with just the one command you sent.

After giving the 3 snmp parameters you can type:

GBE# cat system.cfg

and you will see your changes added to the bottom of the file. Now save the file:

GBE# save

and reboot:

GBE# reboot
